There's a nail polish at the drugstore right now bragging that it's "21-free": twenty-one things it does not contain, listed proudly on a bottle the size of your thumb. Gluten usually makes the list. You were never, we promise, in danger of drinking your manicure.
The three that were worth removing
The counting contest started with a real win. Classic polish formulas leaned on three ingredients with genuinely bad files: toluene, a solvent that's a neurotoxicant at high exposures; formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen used in nail hardeners; and dibutyl phthalate, or DBP, a plasticizer with reproductive toxicity evidence that the EU banned from cosmetics in 2004. Under pressure from advocacy campaigns and that EU ban, major brands dropped all three in the mid-2000s, and "3-free" was born. It meant something.
Then marketing did what marketing does. Five-free. Seven. Ten. Thirteen. Twenty-one. Every number a bigger halo, with many of the new "frees" covering ingredients that were already rare, already restricted, or never used in polish in the first place.
Nobody is auditing the number
Here's the part that should actually annoy you: no regulator defines or checks any of these claims. In 2018, researchers at Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health published a study in Environmental Science and Technology that measured plasticizers in 40 polishes from 12 brands. The labels ranged from 3-free to 13-free, and "10-free" alone came with six different definitions depending on who printed it.
It gets worse. The team found plasticizers at levels above 100 micrograms per gram in five brands that didn't disclose them, including two whose labels specifically claimed to exclude them. A free-from count is a vibe, not a certificate. It tells you what a brand says isn't in the bottle, and says nothing about what is.
The ingredient list on the back panel, unlike the number on the front, is actually required by law. If you care what's in your polish, that's the side of the bottle worth reading.
Meet TPHP, the replacement nobody vetted
When DBP left, something had to keep polish flexible, and a common substitute was triphenyl phosphate, or TPHP, a suspected endocrine disruptor that also works as a flame retardant. In 2015, a Duke University and Environmental Working Group study published in Environment International had 26 women paint their nails with a polish containing it. Within 10 to 14 hours, a TPHP breakdown product in their urine had risen nearly sevenfold. When participants wore gloves instead, the spike largely disappeared, which points at absorption through the skin around the nail.
Keep the scale honest: a temporary rise in a urinary metabolite demonstrates exposure, not injury, and nobody has tied the occasional manicure to a health outcome. The quieter lesson is the pattern. Shame one chemical off the label and its understudied replacement walks in with no obligation to announce itself. Toxicologists call this regrettable substitution. It's the engine of the whole free-from economy.
At the gel salon, the lamp is the bigger question
Gel manicures cure under a small UV oven, and in January 2023 researchers at UC San Diego published a study in Nature Communications that put numbers on what those lamps do to cells. The devices emit UVA, in the 340 to 395 nanometer range. One 20-minute session under a lamp killed 20 to 30 percent of the cultured human and mouse cells exposed; three consecutive sessions killed 65 to 70 percent, and surviving cells showed DNA damage and mutation patterns of the kind produced by reactive oxygen species.
Be precise about what that is and isn't. It's a cells-in-a-dish experiment at deliberately stacked doses, not an epidemiological finding that gel manicures cause skin cancer in people. That study hasn't been done, and the authors were careful to say a real answer would take years of follow-up in actual customers. But UVA is the same band of light your sunscreen bottle warns you about, and a monthly gel habit adds up to an hour or more per year of concentrated exposure on the one patch of skin nobody ever sunscreens. The hedge dermatologists suggested after the study is nearly free: fingerless UV gloves, or broad-spectrum sunscreen on your hands about 20 minutes before your appointment. The same math applies to at-home gel kits, which use the same lamps minus the salon's time pressure.
One more label trap while we're here: an "LED" gel lamp is still a UV lamp. LED describes the bulb technology. The light that cures gel polish is UVA either way.
The person doing eight sets a day
Everything above is scaled to a customer who visits a salon once or twice a month. The serious version of this story belongs to nail technicians, who breathe solvents and filing dust for entire shifts, handle wet product with bare hands, and sit beside curing lamps all day, often in rooms with poor ventilation. Studies of salon workers keep finding polish chemicals, TPHP included, in their air, on their skin, and in their urine at levels above their customers'. OSHA publishes ventilation guidance written specifically for nail salons, which tells you how seriously the problem is taken. If the free-from movement wants a righteous cause, worker ventilation beats a twenty-second "free" every time.

Bottom line
Occasional regular polish is a low worry: buy the color, skip the arithmetic, and don't pay extra for any number bigger than three. If you get gels every month, a pair of cheap fingerless UV gloves is some of the best insurance in beauty. The people who most need protection are doing eight sets a day, so tip like you know that.
