The short version
- Roughly 85 to 90 percent of the world's leather is chrome-tanned with trivalent chromium, the low-toxicity form. That's not the scary one.
- The scary one is hexavalent chromium, which can form in sloppily run tanneries. It's a real contact allergen, which is why the EU caps it in skin-contact leather.

Somewhere between 85 and 90 percent of the world's leather, your belt and your boots almost certainly included, came out of a drum of chromium salts. The clean-living internet would like you to find that terrifying. The truth is duller, and a lot more useful.
Tanning is preservation, not a flavor
Rawhide is meat. Left alone it either rots or dries into something you could shingle a roof with. Tanning chemically cross-links the collagen so the hide becomes stable, flexible leather, and there are two main ways to do it.
Chrome tanning uses trivalent chromium salts and takes about a day. It produces soft, supple, easily dyed, reasonably water-resistant leather at a price that makes a $60 pair of shoes possible. That's why it won.
Vegetable tanning uses tannins extracted from bark, wood, and plant pods, and it takes weeks (traditional pit tanning can run months). It produces firmer, denser leather that can be carved, stamped, and burnished, and that darkens into that honey patina people write poetry about. It's the older method, the slower one, and the more expensive one.
Neither one is "chemical-free." Tannins are chemicals. So is water. What matters is which chemicals end up in the finished product, and in whom.
The chromium in the drum is not the chromium in the headlines
Chromium comes in two forms that matter here, and conflating them is how most leather scaremongering works.
Trivalent chromium (Cr III) is what tanneries actually use. It has low toxicity, binds tightly to the leather, and is literally sold in the supplement aisle as chromium picolinate. Your chrome-tanned jacket is not dosing you with anything meaningful.
Hexavalent chromium (Cr VI) is the villain from Erin Brockovich, a carcinogen when inhaled in industrial settings and a genuine skin sensitizer. No tannery tans with it. But it can form in finished leather when a tannery botches its process control: wrong pH, too much heat, bad oxidation management. That's not hypothetical, and it's why the European Union capped Cr VI at 3 milligrams per kilogram in leather that touches skin, starting in 2015.
Who actually gets hurt by trace Cr VI? People with chromium allergy, which shows up in roughly 2 percent of patients in published patch-test data. For them, a bad pair of shoes or work gloves can mean weeks of eczema. For everyone else, the amount of chromium migrating out of an intact, competently made shoe is a non-event. Detectable is not dangerous, and here the gap between the two is wide.
The real chrome problem is upstream
The honest case against chrome tanning was never about your feet. It's about the people standing in the effluent. Investigations of tannery districts in Bangladesh and India have documented workers handling chrome liquor without protection and untreated waste running straight into rivers. That's a genuine scandal, and it's a labor and environment story, not a consumer-exposure story.
If that's the part that bothers you (it should), the useful signal is the tannery, not the tannage. The Leather Working Group audits and certifies tanneries on environmental performance, and a growing number of brands name their tanneries outright. A chrome-tanned boot from a well-run, audited tannery is a better citizen than a mystery-origin "eco" one.
What veg-tan actually buys you
Structure, mostly. Veg-tan holds a shape, takes tooling, and wears in rather than out, which is why it's the leather of belts, saddles, sheaths, and the kind of wallet you hand down. It starts stiff, water-spots easily, and costs more because it ties up a tannery for weeks instead of hours.
What it doesn't buy you is a cleaner conscience by default. Vegetable tanning produces its own high-strength waste stream, and a tannery that dumps tannin liquor untreated is still a polluter. It's a craft choice with a lovely aging curve, and that's reason enough to buy it.
The exception: if you have a diagnosed chromium allergy, veg-tan (or chrome-tanned goods the maker has tested for Cr VI) is the actual medical answer, especially for shoes and watch straps that sit against sweaty skin all day.
"Vegan leather" means plastic until proven otherwise
Most "vegan leather" is polyurethane film on a fabric backing. Some of it, especially at the cheap end, is PVC, which drags along plasticizers and the least lovable production chemistry in the plastics family. If you're going to buy a plastic jacket, and that's a perfectly legitimate thing to buy, PU is the better plastic. PVC is the one worth walking past.
The newer plant-based materials are better stories than they are revolutions. Piñatex is a felt of pineapple-leaf fiber blended with PLA and finished with a polyurethane resin. Desserto blends cactus with polyurethane. Both are genuinely clever, both cut the fossil content, and both are still plant-plastic hybrids that will crease and wear like coated fabric, not like leather. Calling them plastic-free would be false. Most of the marketing carefully doesn't, and lets you assume.

One shopping habit covers nearly all of this: buy less of it, made better, from a maker who'll tell you where the hide was tanned. A material that lasts fifteen years beats a virtuous one that lasts two.
Bottom line
For the person wearing it, how well the leather was made matters far more than which tannage it got, so buy quality and don't fear the chrome. If you have a chromium allergy, that's the one real medical case: go veg-tan or ask for Cr VI test results. And give "vegan leather" the same scrutiny you'd give any other plastic, because that's mostly what it is.
